Articles - Match Play Outcome FAQ
Submitted by Devin to explain the outcome variable on the Match data objectWhat is a match play outcome?
Within the eGolfr system, the outcome of a match play is stored on the Match.outcome column in the form of a short string, for example "1-up", or "3 & 2".
What does 1-up mean?
1-up indicates the match was concluded at the end of the 18th hole, and the winner was one hole ahead (assuming an 18 hole match)
What does 3 & 2 mean?
"3 & 2" indicates that the match was concluded at the end of the 16th hole, because the winner was 3 holes up and there were only 2 more holes to play #17 and #18 (assuming an 18 hole match).
What does dormie mean?
When a player is referred to as dormie, it means that he/she leads by the same number of remaining regulation holes. The other player must win the remaining holes in order to force a playoff.
What are all the possible outcomes?
Technically there are an infinite amount of outcomes if the match is forced into playoff holes and the players continue to push holes forever, but below is a listing of all of the possible outcomes (that are reasonable):- "WD" - a player withdrew
- "DQ" - a player was disqualified
- "1 up" - the match ended after the last regulation hole and the winner was one hole ahead
- "2 up" - the match ended after the last regulation hole and the winner was two holes ahead (note: the winner was 1 hole ahead going into the last hole (dormie) and then won the last making it 2 up)
- "2 & 1" - the match ended after the 2nd to last regulation hole, as the winner was 2 holes up with only 1 hole left to play.
- "3 & 1" - the match ended after the 2nd to last regulation hole, as the winner was 3 holes up with only 1 hole left to play. (note: the winner was dormie on the 2nd to last hole and then won the last making it a 3 hole margin)
- "3 & 2" - the match ended after the 3rd to last regulation hole, as the winner was 3 holes up with only 2 holes left to play.
- "4 & 2" - the match ended after the 3rd to last regulation hole, as the winner was 4 holes up with only 2 holes left to play. (note: winner was dormie going into the 3rd to last and won)
- "4 & 3" - the match ended after the 4th to last regulation hole, as the winner was 4 holes up with only 3 holes left to play.
- "5 & 3" - the match ended after the 4th to last regulation hole, as the winner was 5 holes up with only 3 holes left to play. (note: implies dormie occured)
- "5 & 4" - the match ended after the 5th to last regulation hole, as the winner was 5 holes up with only 4 holes left to play.
